The problem
What needs solving
Why it matters and what counts as progress
Journalism has long played a critical role in keeping people informed, investigating wrongdoing, and holding powerful institutions accountable. But AI is fundamentally changing how information is created, distributed, and consumed. As AI increasingly becomes an intermediary between people and information, how do we ensure these essential functions continue, even if journalism itself looks completely different? This isn’t necessarily about saving traditional journalism. It’s about ensuring that society continues to have access to credible information, diverse perspectives, independent investigations, and the ability to distinguish fact from fiction. Progress would mean developing and testing new models, technologies, and practices that demonstrably improve people’s ability to identify trustworthy information, verify claims, access independent reporting, and make informed decisions. This could include measurable improvements in information accuracy, source transparency, public trust, access to reliable local information, and the sustainability of independent accountability reporting.
